Good Morning My Friends,
Like many of you, I have been following along with the 2024 Paris Olympics, frankly for many of the sports it is the only time I watch them.
My children's book series is titled Deaf Kids Can. This newsletter is titled Deaf Athletes Can.
Seven deaf athletes represented their countries in Paris.
I'm partial to one specific one, more on that in a minute.
David Smith - USA - Men's Volleyball
Drew Kibler - USA - Men's Swimming
Aaron Small - USA - Men's Canoe/Kayak
Meg Harris - Australia - Women's Swimming
McKenzie Arnold - Australia - Soccer
Diksha Dagar - India - Women's Golf
Emma Meesseman - Belgium - Women's Basketball
These seven athletes are among over 11,000 athletes who competed. These athletes are just a few athletes that shine a light on how deaf kids can do anything hearing kids can do except for hear.
Deaf kids can do anything hearing kids can do except for hear.
Every school visit I do, this IS the main message. At a deaf school, this message helps to encourage the students. At a mainstream school, the same message is used to advocate and educate.
Of the athletes listed above, I'm a big fan of David Smith. He blessed me with an endorsement on my first book Sky, the Deaf Home Run Hero: A Lesson in Confidence. I'm forever grateful and a fan!
It is beautifully illustrated! I liked how the story focused on being able to transcend hearing loss to not only be equal on the playing field but also do good in the world. It's a great lesson not just for kids with disabilities, but for all kids who get a chance to share the world with them as well!
As we head into a new school year, please use this lesson as a way to remind our children about the important of inclusion.
